Half Drop Patterns--How much more paper do you need to order?
Half Drop Repeat
Your half-drop patterns are (mostly) 19 inches wide by 24 inches tall.
With a half drop repeat, every other panel shifts down by half the vertical repeat — in your case 12 inches. This means each panel effectively requires an additional 12 inches of wallpaper to allow for the offset match.
The calculation:
- Standard panel height: your wall height + 10% overage
- Half drop panel height: your wall height + 24 inches (one full repeat) + 10% overage
- That is approximately 15–20% more wallpaper than a straight match pattern of the same size
The simple rule of thumb: If your pattern is a half drop, add one additional panel to your total order. For most standard rooms, this covers the offset waste entirely.
THE MATH — 38" Half Drop Repeat
With a 38-inch vertical repeat, every other panel shifts down by half — 19 inches. That means each panel effectively needs 19 extra inches of material to allow for the offset match.
What this means in real numbers:
For a standard 9-foot (108-inch) wall:
- Straight match: 108 inches + 10% overage = ~119 inches per panel
- 38-inch half drop: 108 + 38 inches (one full repeat) + 10% = ~161 inches per panel
- That is approximately 25-30% more material than a straight match pattern
The simple rule: For a 38-inch half drop, add two full extra panels to your total order for most standard rooms.
