Measuring TIPS

How to Measure Your Wall for Wallpaper

Measure once. Order once. Enjoy it for a lifetime.

Every roll of Melissa Dayton Art wallpaper is printed to order for your room, so careful measuring matters. Because each order is custom printed, all sales are final and cannot be exchanged or refunded. Take a few quiet minutes with the six steps below, and you'll order with confidence.
Six Things to Know Before You Order
Measure the FULL width of your wall (yes, even across windows, doors, mirrors, etc.) 19" 19" 19" 19" 19" 1 2 3 4 5 Measure the FULL height of your wall

Panels are printed in this exact order. Install them left to right.

Measure the entire wall, top to bottom and side to side, and trim around windows, closets, and doors during installation. Special instructions for wainscoting and vaulted ceilings are at the bottom of this page. Every order is custom printed for your space, so please measure with care.

  1. 1
Measure the FULL width of every wall.

Measure wall to wall, in inches, straight across windows, doors, mirrors, closets, trim, and wainscoting.

Do not subtract for doors or windows. You'll trim around them during installation.

Papering more than one wall? Add the widths of every wall together.

  2. 2
Measure your wall at its TALLEST height.

Measure from ceiling to floor at the tallest point.

Every panel in the room is ordered at the same panel height, so the pattern carries gracefully from one panel to the next.

Panels are printed in 2-foot lengths, up to 18 feet, so round your height up to the next full 2 feet.

Vaulted ceiling? See the special instructions below.

  3. 3
    Every panel is 19" wide.

Divide your total wall width by 19" and always round UP.

    95" wall width = 5 panels
    114" wall width = 6 panels

Or enter your measurements into the Wallpaper Calculator on the product page and let it do the math for you.

  4. 4
Order ALL your panels at the same time.

Your wallpaper is printed as one continuous sequence for your space.

Panels are numbered and are meant to be hung left to right, in the exact order they are printed.

Please do not order different panel heights, cut panels apart, rearrange them, or piece them together around doors and windows to save material. The pattern will not line up. Order every panel at ONE height, hang them at that height, then trim.

    Panel order matters. No exceptions.

  5. 5
    When in doubt, round up.

If you order too little and need more panels later, we cannot guarantee:

    • An exact color match between print runs
    • That the pattern sequence will line up with your original order

For that reason, we strongly recommend ordering one extra panel if your measurement is close.

Measured wrong and need more panels? Please email melissa@melissadayton.com and we'll help you find the best way to finish your room.

*One extra panel costs far less than reprinting an entire room.

    How to Order

Step 1: Choose your wallpaper material.

Step 2: Measure the tallest height of your wall or room.

Step 3: Measure the full width of every wall being papered, in inches. For multiple walls, add all the widths together.

Step 4: Enter your measurements into our Wallpaper Calculator, or calculate by hand:

Total wall width ÷ 19" = number of panels needed
Always round UP to the next full panel.

Step 5: Choose the same panel height for the entire room and order all your panels together.

Vaulted Ceilings

Please read this carefully.

Measure your wall at the highest point of the ceiling.

Every panel in that room must be ordered at that tallest height, even where parts of the ceiling sit lower.

Panels are printed in sequence and cannot be cut apart, swapped, rearranged, or pieced together with shorter panels while keeping the pattern repeat intact.

Use the tallest wall height for every panel in the room.

Wainscoting + Beadboard

If wainscoting or beadboard is on ALL walls

Measure from the ceiling down to approximately 3" past the top of the wainscoting or beadboard.

That extra margin gives you enough paper to align the pattern and trim the edge cleanly during installation.

If wainscoting is on only ONE wall

When the wallpaper continues onto walls without wainscoting, order all panels at the full wall height of the tallest uncovered wall.

This lets the pattern flow seamlessly around the room.

Please do not order shorter panels for the wainscoted wall and taller panels for the others.
