This shell reminded me of childhood.

Of beach walks on overcast days when the water and the sky both turned to velvet — that particular blue that only happens when the light goes flat and the whole coast feels quiet and close. I grew up knowing that color. I've been trying to paint it ever since.

When we found this one, polished smooth and full of character, I knew it was the one that held that feeling.

Back in the studio I layered deep ocean blue over cobalt, wash after wash, until the shell looked the way that kind of day feels — rich and moody and completely unhurried. There's a confidence to this piece that the others in the collection don't quite have. It doesn't ask for attention. It simply holds the room.

Hang it alone and it anchors everything around it. Tuck it into the collection alongside Clams 1 through 4 and it becomes the one that grounds the whole wall.

Some colors live in your memory long before you ever paint them.
