Some shells are pretty. This one has character.

Worn smooth by the tide and almost sculptural in form, this clam carried something in it that most shells don't — a complexity that made me stop and really look. Stormy blue layered over warm rust. Deep grey settling into oyster white. The colors of driftwood and wet sand after a summer rain, all held together in one quiet, weathered shell.

I painted it to preserve exactly that — the way it held both warmth and coolness in a single glance. The way it felt like it had been somewhere, seen something, lived a life in the water before it ended up in my hands.

Of all six in this collection, Clam 4 is the one that surprises people. Hang it where the others feel expected and this one will make the wall feel considered. A nautical kitchen. A moody powder room. A beach house gallery wall that needs one moment of contrast to pull everything together.

The coast makes beautiful things. The weathered ones are often the most interesting.
