It started with a morning walk.
My granddaughter and I were at the shore just after the tide had gone out — the kind of quiet morning where the beach feels entirely yours. She found the first shell. Then another. Then we couldn't stop.
Each one was different. Some gleamed with deep indigo and cobalt. Some held the soft warmth of driftwood and dried sand. One was still wet, its surface catching the light in a way that made us both stop and just look. We photographed them before the sun dried them out, trying to hold onto something we knew wouldn't last.
Back in the studio, I painted all six.
Layer by layer on hot press paper, I worked to preserve what made each shell worth stopping for — the color, the texture, the particular quality of light that morning. Six shells. Six studies. Six small pieces of a day I never want to forget.
